As someone who’s always expressed his feelings through pictures, Steve developed an appreciation for photography, inspired by the stunning light and rugged landscapes of Africa. Knowing he would follow his passion for photography, Steve, started his career at the legendary album cover design group, Hipgnosis; an experience that shaped his ability to view the everyday in an unique and unusual way.
After 8 years of shooting fashion, cosmetics, portraits, travel and still-life, Steve moved into directing and lighting TV Commercials. His artistic mark clearly shaped, by the discipline of print brought a distinct, unadorned simplicity to the screen.
In an industry that prizes money above all else, Steve’s ethic is as refreshing as his work. He’s always prized excellence above all else. The results speak for themselves. Three of his commercials have been inducted into the Canadian Advertising Hall of Fame. His work has also been recognized at Cannes, One Show, D&AD, Clio’s, London International Advertising Show, New York Art Directors Show and the Communication Arts Advertising Annual.
Throughout his career as a director, Steve continued shooting stills, answering to no-one but his inner critic once again, critical response to his work was effusive and immediate. This year, four samples of his photography will be honored in the highly regarded Communication Arts Photography Annual.
When Steve’s not shooting, he brings the same passion and intensity to his philanthropic work . He has sponsored four fundraisers, auctioning his photographs to raise money for The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders and by his own initiative, Watercan.
For Steve there is no separation between his life, his work and his art and as he puts it, “My photography has become an important way to express myself. Through it, I can show people how I see, and people can see how I feel.”
